The PMPC started in the 1960s, first as a social club organized by movie writing pioneers Danny Villanueva, Andy Salao, Franklin Cabaluna, Ethel Ramos, and Tony Mortel. The PMPC then transformed into a nonstock, nonprofit corporation, which used to sponsor writing and photo contests among its members.

The group decided to hand out honors to the best Filipino movies through the first Star Awards in 1984.

The Star Awards for Movies will celebrate its 25th year with awards rites at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater of the Ateneo de Manila University in Loyola Heights, Quezon City on May 28. It will be aired on Channel 2 on May 31 starting at 10:30 p.m.

Like last year, the 25th Star Awards will have separate categories for independently produced and digital movies. Those competing for the Digital Movie of the Year category are 100, Boses, Paupahan, Torotot, Yanggaw, Sisa, and Jay.

Aside from awards for acting, and technical excellence, the PMPC also hands out Newsmaker of the Year and Darling of the Press awards to celebrities who have been supportive to the group in the past year.

Nominated in the Newsmaker of the Year category are Manny Pacquiao, Gabby Concepcion, Charice Pempengco, Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, John Lloyd Cruz, and Sarah Geronimo.

Those who were nominated for the Darling of the Press category are Herbert Bautista, Dingdong Dantes, Angel Locsin, Isko Moreno, Edu Manzano, Luis Manzano, and Vicky Morales.

This year’s Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement award recipient is actress and Batangas governor Vilma Santos-Recto.
